Calyx Senior Living Bible Study
A welcoming Saturday Bible study in Fuquay-Varina where Calyx residents, Rawls members, family members, and visitors gather for Scripture, conversation, and prayer.
Learning Together at Calyx
At Calyx Living of Fuquay-Varina, residents and neighbors gather for a senior living Bible study that combines careful attention to Scripture with warm, personal conversation. Calyx residents, their family members, Rawls members, and other visitors are welcome.
The study is part of Rawls Baptist Church’s broader Community Outreach ministry. Rawls members regularly attend alongside residents, building relationships through Bible study, prayer, and Christian fellowship.
Led by Donnie Simpson
How the Study Works
The gathering begins with a welcome, prayer requests, and opening prayer. After Scripture reading and time with the printed handout, Donnie works back through the passage section by section, regularly inviting questions, comments, and discussion. He summarizes the passage before the group closes in prayer.
You do not need to bring a Bible or study materials. Donnie brings printed handouts for everyone, with plenty of extras to take home. Each includes the Scripture passage, study notes, and commentary or reference material. Recent Judges handouts use the New American Standard Bible 1995 (NASB 1995).
In preparing the study, Donnie draws on Christian commentators and teachers including John MacArthur, David Jeremiah, J. Vernon McGee, and A. R. Fausset.
Current & Recent Studies
The group is currently studying Judges. Previous studies have included Exodus, Revelation, Proverbs, and Hebrews. This chapter-by-chapter Bible study typically stays with a book until it is complete, giving the group time to follow its message and discuss questions along the way.
A Warm Welcome for Visitors
A typical gathering includes roughly 15–30 people, most of them older adults. Family members and other visitors are welcome alongside Calyx residents and Rawls members, and Calyx staff may sometimes join the study.
New people are welcomed personally without being put on the spot. Reading aloud is voluntary, and newcomers are not pressured to read or speak. You can ask questions, join the conversation, or simply listen.
The atmosphere is casual and upbeat, with room for humor while taking Scripture seriously. There is no formal dress expectation. Everyone generally remains seated for the hour, and Donnie usually sits with the group too.
Scripture, Fellowship, and Encouragement
Studying God’s Word together gives us time to listen carefully, ask honest questions, and encourage one another. Conversation and prayer are part of the shared learning, with each person welcomed into the group.
As Rawls members and Calyx residents read and reflect together, the study offers a personal setting for Christian fellowship and care. The focus stays on Scripture and the relationships formed as we learn together.
